9 Surprising Benefits of Cannabis Topicals

9 Surprising Benefits of Cannabis Topicals

By: Rachel Garland

You’ve probably heard that cannabis topicals are great for your skin, but did you know they could also treat burns, alleviate arthritis, and take therapeutic massages to a whole other level?

And this barely scratches the surface.

Because cannabis topicals are non-psychoactive, they are a versatile way for you to take advantage of those cannabinoids.

Available as lotions, balms, sprays and oils – cannabis-infused skin products are quickly becoming more than a beauty staple. Indeed, these powerful antidotes offer numerous healing properties.

In celebration of Green Flower’s new online course with expert Jordan Person – Cannabis & Massage – (debuting on February 23 in a free live-stream), check out these 9 surprising benefits of cannabis topicals.

#1) Provides Localized Pain Management

If you’re suffering from back or knee pain, for example, cannabis topicals could help.

Cannabis-infused creams or oils are great for treating pain in a specific area of the body.

Better yet, they are also fast-acting. Once applied, the cannabinoids in topicals bind with the CB2 receptors in your skin, providing quick relief.

Topical cannabis infusions act on a peripheral basis, which means they do not enter the bloodstream. This translates to zero psychoactivity. So you can apply them liberally without the potential side effects of too much THC.

For full-body aches and pains, we suggest cannabis-infused bath salts – or a cannabis massage (see #9).

#2) Enhances Sexual Pleasure

Women and men of the world rejoice, cannabis topicals are making their way into the bedroom. Companies such as FORIA have developed cannabis-infused oils and lubricants designed to enhance sexual pleasure.

Cannabis is a well-known aphrodisiac, particularly for women. In fact, references of cannabis for sexual pleasure date back over 2000 years ago in India where cannabis was incorporated into tantric sex practices.

Today, we’re re-discovering this powerful ancient arouser.

#3) Treats Mild Skin Irritations

Did you know you could be applying cannabis topically for bug bites, scratches, and other skin abrasions? Cannabis-infused creams and salves are ideal because they offer localized pain relief while reducing swelling.

The right cannabis topical can also contain potent antibacterial properties.

However, apply with caution. Not all cannabis topicals are created equally. Always be sure to check the ingredient list first. Certain additives could potentially exacerbate your symptoms.

#4) Alleviates Symptoms of Psoriasis

Sufferers of psoriasis know just how painful the condition can be. Characterized by an excess buildup of skin cells, psoriasis causes itchy, painful red patches on the skin.

Psoriasis can be embarrassing and more important uncomfortable. For many psoriasis patients, the options are limited. After all, there is currently no known cure for the condition.

Cannabis, however, is proving to be a powerful treatment option. A study in 2007 revealed that cannabinoids inhibited the buildup of dead skin cells – a direct cause of psoriasis.

Although few formal studies exist on the relationship between psoriasis and cannabis, there is no shortage of anecdotal evidence.

While more research is needed, the positive impact of cannabis infusions for psoriasis is clear.

#5) Keeps Skin Youthful

Want great looking skin for years to come? Then it’s time to consider incorporating cannabis into your beauty regimen. Applying cannabis-infused balms, oils, and lotions can do wonders for your skin.

Essentially, cannabis applied topically prevents your skin from aging. This can be explained in part by the fact that cannabis happens to be a powerful antioxidant.

Antioxidants are shown to speed up the healing process and prevent tissue damage caused by the environment. One study found that Cannabidiol (CBD) is a more potent antioxidant than Vitamins C or E. So not only does cannabis keep your skin looking more youthful, it also keeps it healthier.

#6) Reduces Inflammation and Arthritis

It’s estimated that 350 million people worldwide suffer from arthritis. While this condition is often associated with the elderly, over a quarter of a million children in the United States are also affected.

Symptoms of arthritis include swelling, pain, and inflammation in the joints. Because arthritic pain is primarily cause by inflammation, cannabis topicals are a potent remedy.

A study in the journal Rheumatology revealed how cannabis helps fight inflammation. The study found that in patients suffering from arthritis, CB2 receptors in the joint tissues were present at an abnormally high rate. Cannabis helps to fight inflammation by activating these receptors. Sure, the need for more research is evident, and yet the current findings are no less astounding.

#7) Heals Burns Faster

Burns are one of the most painful types of injury someone can experience and can take weeks or even months to heal depending on the severity.

A lot of the pain associated with burns is due to inflammation. Cannabis helps soothe inflammation while also reducing pain.

A well-made topical can also help the burn heal faster. And again, we want more research on this. Until then, the anecdotal reports are impressive.

#8) Fights Bacterial Skin Infections

Did you know cannabinoids contain anti-bacterial properties? From boils, cellulitis, impetigo, to even folliculitis – cannabis can provide relief for numerous bacterial skin infections.

And unlike other antibiotics, using cannabis does not lead to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance, even leading some researchers to call cannabis the antibiotic of the future.

Great example: a study in 2008 revealed cannabis could help stop MRSA – a bacterial infection that often develops out of antibiotic resistance.

The researchers concluded:

“All five major cannabinoids tested (cannabidiol, cannabichromene, cannabigerol, tetrahydrocannabinol, and cannabinol) showed potent activity against a variety of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains of current clinical relevance.”

While the researchers did not study the specific implications of cannabis-infused salves, lotions, and oils in relation to antibiotic resilience, the message was clear. Cannabis contains powerful and game-changing antibacterial qualities.

#9) Cannabis Topicals Are GREAT for Therapeutic Massages

Could a cannabis-infused massage oil be superior to any other type of massage product? The current science seems to suggest as much when you consider the therapeutic advantage of targeting those CB2 receptors in the skin, reducing any inflammation or pain.

This can be great for conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia, sports injuries, neuropathy, and much more.

We’ve even got anecdotal reports from massage therapists who notice a big difference in how cannabis topicals help keep their own inflammation levels in check after giving a massage.

But if cannabis topicals are so great for massage, how do you choose the right topical? What ingredients do you look for? What do you need to know if you’re a massage therapist, nurse, or any other type of healing practitioner?

If you want to learn more about the therapeutic power around using cannabis topicals, you can check out Green Flower’s new online course with nurse and massage therapist Jordan Person, “Cannabis and Massage: Everything You Need to Know” (debuting on February 23 in a free live-stream).

Welcome Jessica!

jessica

We have a new team member here at Primal Therapeutics! Please join us in welcoming Jessica Johnson.  She has a healing touch and knows exactly how to find those painful problem areas.

Jessica’s love of the healing arts started when she was a small child in Her father’s chiropractor office. There you could find her hidden away in the empty massage therapist room. She spent all her time in that room lying on the massage table and looking at as many massage books as she could. By the ripe age of 9 she had already started building her personal clientele list, her fellow classmates would line up and wait for a shoulder rub from her during story time. Since then, her love for massage has only grown.
Taking all the knowledge of the body she could from her father, she finally went on to Denver School Of Massage Therapy and after a year of night classes; she fulfilled her childhood dream of being a licensed  massage therapist. Finally turning her passion into a career. Again, her love for the healing only grew.  She continues to learn as much as she can about the body’s healing secrets.
Jessica says, “joining the Primal Therapeutics team was a complete game changer for her.” She has worked with many injuries while working at a chiropractic office; but she never experienced the body instantly reacting so positively to a simple remedy. Mixing her healing touch and the cannabis infused oil, the bodies she has worked on have shown amazing results, she was astonished and immediately intrigued in the amazing healing properties of the cannabis massage oil.

If you are interested in experiencing Jessica’s healing touch please don’t delay, treat yourself today. Book Jessica HERE.

One Busy Lady!

Our founder is also the executive director of Denver NORML. Since January of this year Jordan has been splitting her time between cannabis infused massage therapy and leading a city wide ballot initiative. There have been days when her time has been split directly in half and she has worn both hats willingly.

The months Jordan has dedicated to the cause of legalizing private marijuana clubs and special event permits have taught her many lessons. She intends to carry those lessons into her business and use the knowledge she has gained to better Primal Therapeutics as a whole.

On August 15th the dedicated group of volunteers Jordan has been leading turned in 149 petition packets and just under 8,000 signatures in hopes to be qualified for the November 2016 ballot.  As of this publication Denver NORML is currently waiting to find out if they qualified.

Primal Care on Etsy

Being believers in plant medicine and herbal solutions for health and wellness our search for the very best product line was a journey that began many years ago.  Our founder Jordan grew up with incredibly sensitive skin and numerous allergies making it difficult for her to use most products found in drugstores.  As she became an adult she quickly discovered the products that worked best for her were found in natural food stores and contained the fewest ingredients possible. At the start of Primal Therapeutics the search began for the best product for our patients. Jordan had the idea in mind that she would only use products on her patients that she herself could use on her skin. After continuing to suffer with severe allergies throughout her life, she felt if the product was good for her sensitive skin then it would also be good for her patients.

The results of this research, after hundreds of patients seen,  has become a personal mission and a passion for creation.  We have been very busy at Primal Therapeutics taking the products we have been making for ourselves and our loved ones and making them available for anyone who wants them. Thanks to the popular sight Etsy, the home of homemade, we have opened our shop.

We will carry four Primal Care products and we will offer seasonal options throughout the year. Each product is made to order allowing you to personalize your primal experience.  You can choose the scent and size to whatever your custom requirements may be.  Made with all natural and organic ingredients and free of chemicals and dyes,  these products are excellent for people with sensitive skin and allergies. Our custom oil blend and proprietary herb blend are healing and soothing and sure to please the senses.

We hope you like our new line of products and if you have any questions or special order requests, please don’t hesitate to message us and let us know. We look forward to taking care of your body care needs the primal way.

Cannabis Usage From Head to Toe

Cannabis is capable of alleviating an array of symptoms with proper dosing. Being in Colorado as a medical marijuana patient I am able to use it to treat ailments from head to toe. Utilizing cannabis as a holistic form of treatment for my health and well-being has been very successful for me. Any time I experience any type of pain or discomfort I always reach for a form of cannabis as opposed to an OTC medication or pharmaceutical.

Medical Marijuana can be utilized and ingested through various methods. The three basic methods that I use and will discuss here are: edible, topical and inhaled formats. Please note that these methods are what I personally have found to be effective and have not been scientifically tested.

Edible forms include: ethanol based tincture, cannabis butter or olive oil infused foods, full plant extraction cannabis oil (FECO)

Inhaled forms include: smoking cannabis flowers or dry herb by using a vaporizer or other smoking device.

Topical forms include: using salves, oils, body soaks, body scrubs and lotions that have been infused with cannabinoids THC, CBD and CBN.

CANNABIS USAGE FOR THE HEAD AND FOR THE MIND

CANNABIS USAGE FOR THE HEAD AND FOR THE MIND

  • Head– Headaches via topicals by applying to the forehead and temples, and inhaling an Indica strain. There are also skin benefits from using topical facial cream for hydration and smoothing of fine lines
  • Mental– Anxiety, Depression, Panic Attacks and Social Anxiety- relief achieved from inhaling an Indica strain and from the ingestion of edibles at doses above 50mg per my personal tolerance. I recommend all edibles should be dosed in 10mg increments until you know your needed range. Too much is not fun, and too little is ineffective.

CANNABIS USAGE FOR BETTER BREATHING

  • Lungs– Reduction of brochospasms from Asthma in edible form thanks to the broncho-dialator properties of cannabis. It is not effective for acute or emergent symptoms requiring a rescue inhaler, it works best as preventative medicine.

CANNABIS USAGE FOR NAUSEA BETTER THAN ANY OVER THE COUNTER MEDICINE

  • Abdomen– Nausea/Vomiting- edible in small doses dependent on the reason for the symptoms, coconut oil capsules of ethanol extracted cannabis oil in doses of 25mg until nausea ceases, and inhaled-generally an Indica strain. If the nausea is due to an alcohol hangover, a Sativa strain may work better.  Surgical scars- topical to reduce scarring. The transdermal absorption of cannabis is excellent for expediting healing and reducing scars.

CANNABIS USAGE FOR MUSCLE PAIN

  • Muscle/Low Back Pain– from a ruptured disc at L5-S1 causing tight muscles, this was the result of a car accident. I refused surgery and used chiropractic care, massage therapy and cannabis in all of its forms for relief. Both Indicas and Sativas have been effective for my muscle pain. Topicals are my best friend when my back begins to spasm after a long day of healing people and any edible form can be effective, as edibles tend to be felt more in the body then in the mind.

My symptoms are alleviated with cannabis everyday of my life and I never stop learning. I love discovering new ways for utilizing this miracle plant for health and wellness. My wish is that in time, safe access to this plant will be available to everyone who needs it. The hardest thing for anyone to understand about marijuana is dosing. Every single person has a different endocannabinoid system and needs a different dosage. For some people, smoking may not be their preference, but edibles and topicals may work effectively.  It is much easier for a doctor to be able to say “take two of these and call me in the morning.” When using cannabis for health and treatment trial and error along with documentation is the best way to learn what will work best for you.

~I wish you luck on your journey of searching for truth and healing through cannabis.

NEW USES FOR THIS MIRACLE PLANT ARE FOUND DAILY

Worry Free Winter Tonic

ingredients

Last winter, I spent the majority of it sniffling, sneezing, coughing and wheezing. It was awful. I thoroughly examined my diet in attempts to replenish any deficiencies. I went from being gluten free to eating bread again. I went over all of my allergens again and again hoping I may have missed something. My breathing continued to worsen no matter what I tried to do for myself. The only thing that seemed to make me better was the weather changing back to a warmer more manageable temperature and the rescue inhaler prescribed to me by an Emergency Room Physician.  After my lungs finally filled with enough fluid to cause my asthma from childhood to return to me in a full exacerbation I ended up staying in the hospital for 2 days.

I want this winter season to be different. I want to be well. I began researching holistic treatment for the prevention and treatment of colds and flu. I realized that all last winter whenever I was sick I would always take some form of homeopathic treatment that contained Elderberries. Reaching this sativa hybrid Sour Diesel induced epiphany made me want to understand those little berries a whole lot better. I wondered what other herbs could assist Elderberries in taking it to the next level of health. Which led me to compose the following list of herbs I am hoping will take me to a higher road of health.

  • Elderberry is used for its antioxidant activity, to boost the immune system, for coughs, colds, flu, bacterial and viral infections even and tonsillitis. It has been beneficial for asthma patients as well. The enhancement of the immune system is unsurpassed.
  • Hibiscus has also been used traditionally to treat coughing and has been used for its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. It supports respiratory health including the throat.
  • Orange Peel is loaded with natural histamine suppressing compounds making it wonderful for allergy prone individuals like myself. It can help expel congestion and cleanse the lungs.
  • Rose Hips are jam packed with Vitamin C. They are an excellent immune system supporter and are also rich in Vitamin A helping fight off infections.
  • Ginger is used for upper respiratory tract infections, cough, and bronchitis. It is an antibacterial, antiviral,  and rich antioxidant.
  • Cinnamon naturally warms the body and clears mucous and congestion caused by colds, flu and allergies.
  • Honey(local, raw and organic) not only is it naturally an anti-bacterial, using a honey that is local it can dramatically reduce allergy symptoms.

I went to my local herb store and purchased all of the ingredients I researched to combine them all into one mega healthy concoction. Each item I used is organic and locally sourced and I urge you to always do the same when possible. I present you with the elixir I am hoping keeps me healthy all winter long. I call it the “Worry Free Winter Tonic”.

CHEERS TO GOOD HEALTH!

A special thank you to all Veterans

We must remember that our freedom is not free. We are the home of the free because of the brave. Thank you to all those currently serving and to all those that have served our country to protect our freedoms.

Primal Therapeutics was honored to provide chair massages to local Veterans at the Operation Grow 4 Vets November event.  It was truly an unforgettable day.  I massaged men with shrapnel still inside them, a man with a broken back from when a Humvee rolled over him, men who had been victims of ambush, road side bombings and men waiting for the disability they so severely need from the VA. It was a very humbling experience for me.

Operation Grow4Vets has an incredible mission, vision and purpose and Primal Therapeutics looks forward to participating at all of their future events.

“OUR MISSION: The mission of Operation Grow4Vets is to help reduce the staggering number of Veterans who die each day from suicide and prescription drug overdose. We provide Veterans with the knowledge and resources necessary to obtain or grow their own marijuana for treatment of their medical conditions.

OUR VISION: To raise awareness by enlisting the public’s aid and support in ensuring that all injured and wounded Veterans receive the respect and dignity of life that they deserve.

OUR PURPOSE: To provide Veterans with unique products, programs and services designed to assist them in living with injuries sustained while protecting our freedom. Operation Grow4Vets is a national, nonpartisan organization headquartered in Colorado.

Operation Grow 4 Vets

As a very special thank you to all the Veterans, we are offering your first cannabis infused massage for only $50!  Appointments must be booked within two weeks of 11/11/14.  Click the “Book Now” button at anytime to schedule.
